Holocaust Memory and Theatre with Professor Erika Hughes
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2026, GSA welcomes Erika Hughes, writer, director, and Professor of Performance & Society, for a talk exploring how theatre has been one of the most significant ways the Holocaust has been remembered worldwide over the past eighty years.
Erika will discuss her work as a director and co-author of The Amazing Life of Margot Heuman, a digital documentary performance that tells the life story of Margot Heuman, a Jewish lesbian survivor of the Holocaust. The film, produced in 2021, has toured museums and universities throughout the UK, Germany, Canada, Austria, Italy, and the USA.
Her talk will also detail examples of important Holocaust performances from her recent book Holocaust Memory and Youth Performance (Bloomsbury/Methuen Drama 2024), including Tony Kushner’s But the Giraffe!, Janet Langhart Cohen’s Anne and Emmett, Hans-Werner Kroesinger’s Die Kindertransporte, and the Instagram performance eva.stories.
Erika is Professor of Performance & Society and Associate Dean of Research for Camberwell, Chelsea, and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, University of the Arts London. Her work sits at the intersection of performance, history, cultural studies, and environmental justice.
