All our 1,500 16-18 year old students will take part in a 1 hour tutorial on 'Lessons from the Past', linked to the Bridging Generations theme during the week of Holocaust Memorial week. Students will look at the period 1933-39 and investigate how discriminatory, antisemitic and racist laws were introduced from 1933 that marginalised and isolated Jews and other communities. We’ll reflect on how the legal system was weaponised to remove rights and how prejudice escalated to state approved violence over a fairly short period of time that changed Germany from a democracy to a dictatorship. Events that paved the way to the Holocaust.
We’ll think about what can be learned from the events of 90 years ago that are relevant to today’s world and ask students to make pledges to protect our modern freedoms, For example, through reducing on line hate and outrage, looking at media critically, being aware of disinformation, challenging racist, antisemitic, islamophobic and homophobic, (etc) stereotyping, banter and comments, protesting through legal and civic means when modern rights may be eroded, not being a bystander and protecting and showing empathy for those who may be victims of prejudice.
*With thanks to UCL Centre for Holocaust Studies for some of the material used in our tutorial
