Glasgow Caledonian University is commemorating the eightieth anniversaries of the liberation of Auschwitz and the end of the Second World War in Europe with three talks on the themes of criminality in war, military occupation, and their effects on civilians. The main focus of the event is on wartime occupied Greece, 1941-44, with presentations on the fate of the Greek Jews in the Holocaust, German security warfare and its impact on civilians, and a comparison of the Greek famine and the Dutch Hongerwinter and the intergenerational trauma they precipitated. The theme of warfare’s impact upon civilians is universal, however, and increasingly pressing given both the importance of remembrance as the wartime generation disappears, and the growth of conflict and political extremism in our own times.

The presentation panel consists of Professor Oonagh Walsh and Dr Ben Shepherd of GCU, and Dr Paris Chronakis of Royal Holloway. The Q&A will be moderated by GCU honorary fellow Dr Angela Shapiro.
