As the only British soil occupied by German forces in the Second World War, Jersey remembers the victims of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent acts of genocide in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. There is a special focus on the hundreds of local victims of Nazi persecution imprisoned in the Island and sent to prisons, concentration and internment camps in France and Germany; in particular the 21 who died in those camps and prisons. And the 16,000 slave and forced workers from Europe (including Soviet POWs) and North Africa brought to the Channel Islands to fortify them. First, second and third generation descendants of the 21 Islanders who died in German camps and prisons, local victims of Nazi persecution and slave and forced workers will be taking part. The commemoration begins at 1pm on 27 January. The guest speaker is Helen Stone of Generation 2 Generation, the UK-based Holocaust Education Charity, providing Holocaust speakers to schools and other organisations. Over 40 wreaths will then be laid at the Lighthouse Memorial on the New North Quay, dedicated to the local victims of Nazi persecution.
