Monday 27th January commenced with a private wreath-laying at St John’s Gardens. Those in attendance included Lord Mayor, Cllr Richard Kemp, Rabbi Natan Fagleman and the president of the Merseyside Jewish Representative Council, Barry Levene. They were joined by pupils from Alsop High School, Liverpool Lib Dem opposition leader Carl Cashman, Liverpool council leader Liam Robinson and Cllr Richard Clein.
Following the wreath laying there was an invite-only service at Liverpool Town Hall. The event opened with a performance by King David High School musicians. The Lord Mayor gave a welcome address. There was candle lighting and a one minute silence. Rabbi Fagleman recited a prayer and there was an Act of Commitment by Leaders of Faith Communities. Guest speaker at the service was Francine Palant. Francine’s mother family all perished in Auschwitz as did most of her father’s. He survived miraculously and returned to Paris nearly half his body weight. Students from Alsop High School did a presentation on the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The Belvedere Academy focused on the 30th Anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
