On the 12th February, Year 9 received a talk from Maralyn Turgel from the Generation2Generation organisation who spoke about her father’s story of survival in the Holocaust. In 1942, Marilyn’s father, Sam Gardner was selected to work as slave labourers in an ammunitions factory. A year later he was moved to Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Finally, in April 1945 Sam was taken on a long ‘death journey’ on cramped cattle trucks with no food, water or sanitation, to Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Out of 2000 on the journey he was one of 42 that survived. It was an incredibly sobering, touching and eye-opening story which enabled the pupils to emotionally connect with the events of the Holocaust.
