As part of Newcastle City Council's Holocaust Memorial Day commemorative programme, Professor Ian Biddle tells the story of how we came to understand the term “Holocaust” and where it comes from. Who first coined the term? When did it become a proper noun? How did we first come to make sense of the systematic slaughter of 11 million people in Europe? How has our understanding changed since its first use?

The lecture will introduce some key moments in the history of our understanding of the term, including cinematic, literary and other representations that help us understand the enormity of this thing we call the Holocaust.
