On January 27 2026 Southampton will mark the UK’s national Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day (HMD) with a commemorative event organised by the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations (University of Southampton) on behalf of the city.
This year's event will focus on the commemoration of the Romani
Holocaust. It will include a talk delivered by Professor Celia Donert, and
readings from Juliette de Bairacli Levy’s Wanderers in the New Forest.
We will also be hosting a collaborative exhibition from the Romani
Community Archaeology (John-Henry Phillips & Dr. Stu Eve), New
Forest Heritage Centre, and Kye Preston (Undergraduate student at the
University of Southampton) titled 'The Close: The Thorney Hill Gypsies,
1964-74'.
