Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked in Guernsey on Monday 27th January with events that remember the victims of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide.
Wreaths will be dedicated and laid at the memorials on White Rock to the Jewish women, the Guernsey Eight and the foreign workers at 1pm.
This will be followed by a gathering in the Town Church, starting at 1.30pm.
The service will include contributions from students of the Guernsey Music Service and The Guernsey Institute, and will also include reflections on the significance of Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Guernsey Music Centre String Quartet, made up of students from several schools, will be performing Andante by the 18th-century Venetian composer Albinoni. The manuscript of which was discovered and rescued shortly after the end of World War II from the Saxon State Library in Dresden, which had preserved most of its collection, although its buildings were destroyed in the bombing raids in February and March 1945 by the British and American Air Forces.
This piece will be accompanied by movement choreographed by students from the Performing Arts course at The Guernsey Institute. The quartet will also be performing the Andante from Mozart's String Quartet in C major (no.4), which was written on his third trip to Italy in 1772.
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated in the British Isles on 27th January and each year, activities take place across the UK, bringing people together from all backgrounds to learn more about the Holocaust and more recent genocides, for a better future. This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
