Knowing, remembering, and forgetting the Holocaust in 2026
Dr Andy Pearce, Director, UCL Centre for Holocaust Education and Associate Professor in Holocaust and History Education
Organised by the Centre for Public History at the University of Essex
The further we move away from the Holocaust, the more prominent its presence feels in our contemporary world. Eighty years on from its end, we arguably now do more to 'know' and 'remember' the Holocaust than ever before. Yet 'more' isn't always better, and whilst we may have more knowledge and more memory, that does not mean we are any less likely to forget. In fact, there are good reasons to ask whether much of our educational and memory work in fact encourages forgetting, rather than knowing and remembering. In this talk, Andy will reflect on the relationship between knowing, remembering and forgetting the Holocaust in contemporary Britain.
