This week is Trustees Week, an opportunity to highlight the great work that Trustees do in volunteering their time to make important decisions for charities. HMDT Chief Executive Olivia Marks-Woldman reflects on the support provided by HMDT Trustees.
‘How can you prove that HMD has an impact?’
‘Are we spending public money in the most effective way we could be?’
‘Are our resources reaching as many as people as they could be?’
These are questions I’m asked by our Trustees, who meet every couple of months to discuss HMDT at a strategic level. We benefit from real experts from a wide range of fields, and all with a passion for commemorating the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
All charities must be overseen by a Board of Trustees, and those trustees must be volunteers, giving their time alongside other commitments: work, family, other social and charitable activities. Our trustees ensure we meet our legal and financial responsibilities, that we fulfil our charitable purposes and have a clear direction. In addition to these duties, HMDT’s trustees are deeply committed to honouring those who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, and applying the lessons of these events to the present day.
Trustees act as sounding boards for ideas, help the staff team develop projects or give training sessions, and many contribute on sub-groups to oversee specific areas of activity. They have insights and experience that benefit all HMDT’s work.
Our trustees have told us how they will take a step to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2014.
Vice Chair, Henry Grunwald, says ‘I will take a step to do all that I can to make sure that the day is marked even more widely and successfully than ever before‘.
Our Chair, Cathy Ashley, says 'I will take a step to raise awareness of HMD so that we learn from the past, reflect and act to prevent future atrocities and genocide”.
Trustee Nick Sigler will take a step to ‘record the life experiences of a Holocaust survivor’.
