[Extra]Ordinary Portraits – A resource
This resource supports teachers and youth leaders in engaging young people to explore experiences of persecution and discrimination through art.
This resource outlines an arts project in which students and young people learn about a person who has experienced identity-based discrimination or persecution – for example, a Holocaust or genocide survivor, or someone targeted in conflict or forced to migrate because of their identity – and create a portrait of this person. The resource includes suggested life stories, guidance on how to create a portrait and examples of portraits. Activities built around example portraits encourage reflection on how to convey a person’s background and experiences visually. Teachers and youth leaders can use the resource to facilitate an arts project or to organise a small arts competition. This resource allows students and young people to mark Holocaust Memorial Day through art.
You can access more examples of portraits on our webpage that showcases artwork submitted for [Extra]Ordinary Portraits competition that was held ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023.
