Join us at the Northern Ireland War Memorial on Thursday 25 January 2024 from 7pm-8:30pm as we mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a FREE lecture titled 'A Haven from Hitler - The Story of Jewish refugees who came to Northern Ireland in the 1930s and 40s' by Steven Jaffe.

In the 1930s Northern Ireland became home to a small number of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. The Refugee farm in Millisle is relatively well known, but Steven Jaffe's talk will also cover Jewish families from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary, who made new homes for themselves in places like Shrigley, Fivemiletown and Cookstown. Steven will examine the impact such families had on the social, cultural and economic life of Northern Ireland. He will also draw on the stories of Jewish refugees, many of which feature in the online map resource at belfastjewishheritage.org.

To attend the lecture, please book your FREE ticket by following the Eventbrite link.

About the lecturer:
Steven Jaffe grew up a member of the small and close-knit Jewish community in the north of Belfast. A history graduate from Cambridge University and a former lawyer, he now lives in London where he works as a consultant to Magen David Adom, Israel's Red Cross affiliate. Steven is director of the Belfast Jewish Heritage project and has conducted walking tours of Jewish heritage in his native city. He co-chairs Northern Ireland Friends of Israel.
