Decrypting the German coding system called Domino, used by the SS and German Police to encipher secret messages about the Final Solution, was one of Bletchley Park’s less well-known wartime achievements. For four years, from 1941 to 1944, Codebreakers at Bletchley were decrypting thousands of intercepts that revealed the shocking reality of the German persecution of Europe’s Jews. These were not only signals from the Third Reich but also the encoded diplomatic and military signals of countries such as Italy, Japan, The Vatican, France, Turkey and Spain.
Christian Jennings’ book, 'The Holocaust Codes', provides a new and detailed account of how the SS, Gestapo and German Police also used coded messages to try to conceal the mass killings, even from their own leaders. Meanwhile, the decoding of these signals by the Allies gradually revealed the horrific details.
