Two Church of England Primary Schools in commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day this year for the first time by planting two flowering cherry trees in their school grounds. ( see also submission for Cradley Primary School Malvern
Mark Michaels from the Jewish community spoke to the pupils from year 6 at Bosbury Primary Schools about the Holocaust before the tree planting. Mark’s family escaped the death camps as they fled to England on the Kindertransport before the Nazi oppression and transports of millions to the camps, in the late 1930s. By sharing his family's story Mark emphasised that he was showing the importance of Bridging Generations - this year HMD theme. The children in Bosbury had been studying the causes of World War 2 and the persecution of Jews up to and including Kristallnacht . Mark Michaels was able to show photographs to both schools of the the life of Jewish people when the persecution started and intensified.
The local Garden Centre at Hop Pocket, near Ledbury were keen to get involved and donated two fine flowering cherry trees to the schools. These were planted in memory of two primary school-aged children who perished in the Holocaust and who had no family left to remember them.
