Holocaust Memorial Day is observed across the UK, and encourages remembrance of those who have lost their lives through systematic, targeted persecution and genocides.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place annually on 27 January. The day will be marked in Coventry by a free event which will take place at the Belgrade Theatre. The theme of this year’s event is Bridging Generations.

The main speaker of the event is Jeanette Marx, from Generation 2 Generation, a Holocaust education charity. She will recall the story of her mother, who was transported from their home in Poland to concentration camps.

The event programme will also include a commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, as well as contributions from local poets, speakers and dancers.

Students from local secondary schools will discuss the importance of Holocaust Memorial Day through spoken word, poetry and performances.

Attendees will also hear from Cllr Rachel Lancaster, the Lord Mayor of Coventry; Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council; and Julie Nugent, Chief Executive of Coventry City Council.
