On Holocaust Memorial Day we commemorate the six million Jews, murdered during the Holocaust alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution, including Poles, Roma and Sinti people, disabled people, LGBT+ people, Black people, trade unionists and political opponents of the Nazis.
The Holocaust emerged from fascism and war, with Nazis developing their ideology on racism. It was not the starting point. That we can see parallels to the fascist movements directed against groups, perceived as outside the national community, during the 1920s and ’30s is a warning: if this is not stopped much worse may be on its way.
The Threat of Reform
Recent polls have predicted that Reform UK could win a majority of seats in Cumbria at the next election, with wins predicted in Barrow, Carlisle, Workington and Whitehaven.
Last year Cumbria seen its 1st Reform Councillor, Chris Colley for Egremont, elected in May, followed by a further 3 in Barrow, in August.
Reform UK won 5 seats at the last General Election and currently have 8 sitting MP’s, after recent deflections from the Conservatives, notably Suella Braverman (twice sacked from the Home Office, once for breaking the ministerial code) and Robert Jenrick, who joined Reform UK just hours after being sacked by the Conservatives.
Now is the time to organise against fascism. Together we can keep our workplaces and communities hate-free.
