West Mains School (ASN): Making Memories
As a school for children with complex and severe learning need, we wanted to make our HMD activity meaningful for them. We expanded on the HMD theme of memories across the generations. We invited families to our making Memories Assembly. We held the event on 13.2.2026 from 9:45am until 11:00am. Parents, grandparents and other family members attended and brought a special item from home that would enable the learners to share a memory with their family. Some brought photos, others brought objects, such as a teddy, toys or books that had special significance.
The assembly had an interactive sensory story, games where we had to remember actions or sounds, and songs. At the end families snuggled in a blanket listened to music and shared their special memory object with their child. Some children then made a heart basket with their family, to fill with sweets to take home at the end of the day and share more memories after school.
After the event families then had opportunity to stay for tea/ coffee.
Families expressed very positive feedback about the event; how engaged the pupils were and how great it was to share and build memories between home and school.
