HMDT Blog: Five ways to mark HMD
Not sure how to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) this year? Here are five simple ways that you can mark HMD in 2021.
There are just a few weeks to go before Holocaust Memorial Day 2021. The theme for HMD 2021 is Be the light in the darkness and it encourages everyone to take action to ‘be the light’.
Although HMD will be different to previous years, there are lots of ways to get involved from home.
Here are five ways you can mark HMD this year:
1. Attend a virtual HMD event…
Our Activity Map shows just some of the HMD events that are taking place nationwide. Search with your postcode, or by the type of activity you’d like to take part in. There are plenty of online activities on the map which you can join from home. If you’re organising an event, let us know so that more members of the public can find an activity near them and get involved.
2. …Or organise an event yourself!
Our HMD Together resources provide everything you need to organise a virtual HMD event with your local community, faith group, colleagues or anyone else. You could organise a virtual film screening, learn to cook a traditional Jewish or Rwandan dish, host a virtual book club meeting, and much more.
Don’t forget to let us know what you organise!
3. Watch the UK Ceremony for HMD
For the first time, and in keeping with social distancing guidelines, the UK Ceremony for HMD will be fully virtual. Register below to watch the ceremony live at 7pm on 27 January.
4. Join the nation and #LightTheDarkness
At 8pm on 27 January, get ready to Light the Darkness with us. Households across the UK will be lighting candles and putting them in their windows to:
- remember those who were murdered for who they were
- stand against prejudice and hatred today
Upload a photo of your candle on social media using the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #LightTheDarkness
5. Learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides
On HMD, we learn from the past to create a better, safer future, so take the opportunity to explore our resources library or find out more about what we mark on HMD, and why. You can find information sheets, films, podcasts and much more in the resources section of our website.
