Northern Ireland marks HMD 2023
On 24 January the Northern Ireland Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) ceremony, attended by over 300 people, took place at Belfast City Hall. The ceremony is available for people from Northern Ireland and elsewhere to view and provides an exploration of the theme of this year’s HMD, Ordinary People, from the perspective of personal and written testimony of Holocaust and genocide survivors.
The ceremony includes personal testimony from Holocaust survivor Eve Kugler BEM, filmed testimony from George Bloch whose family fled Nazi persecution and settled in Northern Ireland, and an exploration of the genocide in Cambodia. There are also musical contributions from a chamber choir from Hazelwood Integrated College and the Lowry String quartet. Hydebank Wood College and Belfast Boys’ Model School provided the artwork.
