The New Year’s Honours List for 2019 has been announced, and includes honours for survivors of the Holocaust in recognition of their work in Holocaust education and commemoration.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2019, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Imam Qari Asim have signed a joint letter calling on people to come together, mark the day and create a better future.

More than thirty survivors of the Holocaust and more recent genocides are included in the New Year Honours List in recognition of their work in Holocaust and genocide education.  

For hundreds of years, people have been persecuted and murdered because of their identity. This background knowledge is essential to understanding how the legal concept of ‘genocide’ was developed.
