A concentration camp survivor and a Kindertransportee are in the 2020 Queen’s birthday honours in recognition of their work in Holocaust and genocide education.
Bernd Koschland MBE was born in Germany in 1931. Shortly after the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis began Bernd travelled to England alone on the Kindertransport. Here Bernd recollects his experiences and how they have influenced his life.
Jews responded to the ghetto restrictions with a variety of resistance efforts. Ghetto residents frequently engaged in so-called illegal activities, such as smuggling food, medicine, weapons or intelligence across the ghetto walls, often without the knowledge or approval of the Jewish councils. Spiritual resistance took place through cultural activities such as secret schools and clandestine religious observance, which asserted people’s humanity and individuality.
Holocaust survivors, genocide survivors, the Secretary of State for the Department of Communities and Local Government, Rt. Hon Sajid Javid MP and MPs helped to launch free resources for Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 at a reception hosted by Mike Freer MP and Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh MP at the House of Commons yesterday.
