On the night of 2/3 August 1944, the camp where Roma and Sinti people were held at Auschwitz-Birkenau was liquidated. Thousands of men, women and children of Roma or Sinti origin were murdered in the gas chambers by Nazi officers. Their bodies were burned in pits.
Light the Darkness was marked across the UK - and beyond - for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) on 27 January. From 8pm, iconic landmarks were lit up in purple as part of the collective commemoration.
Ceija Stojka was a member of the Roma community who was persecuted by the Nazis. She was deported with 200 members of her extended family to Auschwitz where most of them were murdered upon arrival. In later life Ceija Stojka spent her time promoting the rights of Roma people, highlighting through her experiences what can happen when prejudice and hatred are allowed to take hold.
Each year thousands of local activities take place across the UK to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).
