Vera Schaufeld MBE, formerly Vera Lowyova, was saved by a man who refused to stand by, Sir Nicholas Winton. She was born in Prague in 1930. In May 1939, following the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, Vera was told that she must move to England on her own. She was only nine years old.

Sir Nicholas Winton was born in Hampstead, London in 1909. For nine months in 1939 he rescued 669 children from Czechoslovakia, bringing them to the UK, thereby sparing them from the horrors of the Holocaust. Sir Nicholas died in July 2015, aged 106.

Today the United Kingdom assumes the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). IHRA is the organisation which evolved from the Stockholm Declaration of 2000 – the international agreement which instituted Holocaust Memorial Day across the world and committed its signatories to preserve the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust.

Survivors of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides joined politicians and dignitaries at the UK's Commemorative Event for Holocaust Memorial Day in Westminster.

Warwickshire Pride were inspired to hold their first Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) event on 27 January 2017 at Central Hall in Coventry. They teamed up with nearby friends Coventry Pride to host an evening of talks and performances to mark HMD and to remember the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution of other groups, with specific reference to LGBT+ victims.
