We launch new resources for HMD 2025

We were joined by 200 people online as we launched brand new resources to support people across the UK to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2025.

We launch new resources for HMD 2025

HMD 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. At the event, our outreach team showcased our new resources and HMD activity organisers shared advice on how to mark this significant year in a meaningful and engaging way.

We also launched our HMD 2025 secondary schools competition, for which we are asking students to submit designs for memorials to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. The winning entries will be exhibited at the HMD 2025 UK Ceremony.

We were joined at the event by Safet Vukalić BEM, a survivor of the genocide in Bosnia, who reflected on his experiences and the importance of learning from genocide:

Considering everything that’s happening around the world these days, it still hurts. We’ve not learned, we keep failing time after time, and it just keeps repeating. I have two young children and I certainly hoped that when they are teens they don’t have to think about wars but unfortunately they will do. We have to do better, we have to learn from genocide and the Holocaust.

Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM, a survivor of the Holocaust, whose life story we have published for HMD 2025, also spoke at the event:

No matter how you try, the Holocaust and the experiences that you have will always stay with you, it’s part of your life. It is sitting here on your shoulder and watching you.

The message that I like to give to all the people who are listening – and I am very privileged to talk to several schools and other people who invite me – is to explain to them what a catastrophe it is to be killing and genocide. Because I am Jewish of course I feel very much for the Jews, however, I also feel for those people who are just being killed for no reason. A life is a life.
