Mission and strategy
Our mission and purpose are based on the Stockholm Declaration and the Statement of Commitment created at the Stockholm Conference on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, in the year 2000. These form the basis of our charitable objectives.
Our mission and purpose
Our purpose is to promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day as the UK’s national day to commemorate the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions more murdered under Nazi persecution. Prejudice still continues today within our communities and across the UK. We also learn and commemorate where persecution led in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is the charity established by the government to promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK. We help protect the legacy of the Holocaust against denial and distortion, and shape a future built on empathy, understanding and respect.
We bring the nation together to remember persecutions of the past and stand against hatred and prejudice in the present.
Our vision and values
Underpinned by our commitment to the Stockholm Declaration and the Statement of Commitment:
We commemorate and educate for a better future
Our values are to demonstrate behaviours that are expert, compassionate and transparent. We form partnerships where appropriate and effective, and signpost to other organisations.
Our goals
Goal 1 – To lead and embed further Holocaust Memorial Day as the nation’s national day of collective Holocaust remembrance, where people feel part of something bigger than themselves, and where it is part of the fabric of UK society.
Goal 2 – To build and expand further local HMD commemorations, by engaging and supporting individuals, organisations (especially schools) and communities across the UK to mark HMD.
Goal 3 – To commemorate and educate about the Holocaust and Nazi persecution of other communities.
Goal 4 – To link the history of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution of other communities with contemporary antisemitism (anti-Jewish hostility) with a focus on Holocaust denial, distortion, inversion and glorification, and with contemporary prejudice and hate, including racism, anti-Muslim hatred, and prejudice against Roma people.
Goal 5 – To learn and commemorate where persecution led in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and in Darfur.
Goal 6 – To significantly increase our total funding, improve the strength and resource of our team, and increase our efficiency through the use of technology.
