A record 5,590 activities for HMD 2016
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2016 saw people all across the UK come together at thousands of diverse activities, remembering all those affected by the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
We are delighted to announce that HMD 2016 was the largest yet, with over 5,590 activities taking place across the UK.
Schools, libraries, faith groups, workplaces, galleries and many more organisations held imaginative and poignant activities, helping communities everywhere explore this year’s theme Don’t stand by.
This announcement comes as we launch our review of HMD 2016 in a new publication: Don’t stand by: 2016 and beyond.
This booklet summarises the work of HMDT in promoting HMD itself, as well as highlighting some of the thousands of activities that have taken place this year.
With reflections on HMD across the UK, media coverage, education and the UK Ceremony, this publication explores how thousands of people refused to stand by and marked HMD 2016.
Some of the highlights for HMD 2016 include:
-
5,590 activities (up from 3,600 in 2015)
-
1,277 print and online media pieces about HMD
-
500,000 people watched the UK Commemorative Ceremony on BBC Two
-
100,000 About HMD booklets distributed
