A Tribute to Revd Bernd Koschland MBE
Statement from HMDT Chief Executive, Olivia Marks-Woldman OBE.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Revd Bernd Koschland MBE, a gentle, kind presence at so many of our events and meetings over the years.
I will especially treasure my memories of Bernd at our Holocaust Survivors’ Legacy Group meetings. These convivial meetings, with plenty of tea and cake, enabled us to hear regularly from a small group of survivors and refugees from Nazism as they shared their views on our resources, Holocaust Memorial Day themes and so many more of our organisational activities. Bernd was a stalwart member for many years, and contributed so many ideas and insights.
Born in Germany in 1931, Bernd travelled alone to the UK on the Kindertransport. Later working as a minister and Jewish studies teacher, Bernd shared his testimony across the UK, teaching future generations about the Holocaust.
Our thoughts are with his family, and we hope they are comforted by knowing the immense respect and affection in which Bernd was held. Bernd’s warmth and thoughtfulness will inspire all of us at the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for years to come.
We will continue to honour his legacy through our work.”
